Winter Haven

Posted on September 28, 2009 12:00 AM MST by Tiffany Kinerson

When Vera Gamble hears her brother may have been found dead on the island of Winter Haven, she treks cross country to not only discover the body is his but also to find that he hasn’t aged one year since she last saw him over a decade earlier.  Unwilling to leave until she can figure out the cause of this anomaly, Vera endures hardships on the creepy island complete with ghost stories of pilgrims past, a vengeful stalking witch, a bleeding forest of ancient trees, and a beautiful man imprisoned in a broken-down mansion.

Surprising in his entwine of Christian fiction with the Gothic genre, Athol Dickson creates a white-knuckle read for those who enjoy suspense and mystery. At once creepy and hopeful, I was entranced by shy Vera’s growth into a confident detective in search of truth. In spite of local threats and even attacks, she embraces her strength through God. And if you read it, then you, too, can find out if the muted wallflower gets the shining trophy of love throughout it all.

Athol Dickson is one of my favorite authors on the planet, so you will see his name here again. As for Winter Haven, I am not alone in my appreciation of the book. It received the Christian Fiction Review’s Best 10 of 2008, Romantic Times’ Top Pick, received a Starred Review from the Library Journal, and finaled in the 2009 Christy Awards. Right on, Establishment/“Old Guard”, it’s great to see fabulous writers receiving recognition.
