So Brave, Young, and Handsome By Leif Enger Posted on May 14, 2009 12:00 AM MST by Kasey Heinly
After becoming fast friends, the two embark on a journey to make peace with Glendon’s estranged wife, but they do not journey alone. Ex-Pinkerton Charles Siringo, who has been chasing Glendon for years, pursues them like a bloodhound, and Monte finds himself caught up in an adventure the likes of which he could only dream of writing, but one from which he may not escape alive. The story moves beautifully from Monte’s inner struggles and outer entrapment. He is an ordinary man wrestling with the desire to live a life that is in some way extraordinary, something everyone can identify with. Many of the minor characters in the story were equally compelling. Though this is a completely different story than his first book, Peace Like a River, Leif Enger again writes with dramatic, moving prose and weaves a story of inner struggle and triumph to bring us yet another worthy read. |

Monte Becket is a writer struggling to craft a work that can follow his first novel and its tremendous success. As he sits alone, desperately cranking out a scene on his typewriter outside his riverside home in Minnesota, he notices a man standing in a boat rowing downriver into the fog. That man, who calls himself Glendon Hale, changes Monte’s world.
