Ask and You Will Receive

"For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?"  - Matthew 7:8-9

My youngest, Matthew, is a cuddle bug. He snuggles with everything and loves stuffed animals. Especially those funky-silly monster-ish stuffed things called Ugly Dolls. Have you heard of them? They have names like Big Toe and Ugly Ghost, Target and Wage. Pretty funny. Pretty ugly.

But he loves them.

He also loves his fleece blanket. My mother-in-law got him and my other son one a while back, and Matthew commandeered them. Said that they’re “warm....” And he likes it as the layer closest to his skin—under his sheet, even.

So, with his birthday around the corner, and since I’m a quilter, I had an idea one night while I was tucking him in. “Hey, Matthew, what would you think about me making you a fleece blanket for your birthday?”

His eyes grew round and he lifted his fleece blanket, studied it, then looked at the quilt on his bed, studied it. “Could it be made out of a bunch of different colored squares? Like my quilt?”

I smiled. “Sure. I could do that.” With that settled, I walked downstairs, so proud of myself and my creative ingenuity. A birthday present I could make for him. A super simple gift for generations.

A few days later, we walked by some fabric in a store, and I brought up the blanket again. “Is there a fabric that you think would look cool?”

Matthew eyed me. “But I thought you said you’d make me an Ugly Doll blanket.”

An Ugly Doll blanket? “Well, Matthew, I said I’d make a fleece blanket. They don’t make Ugly Doll fleece.”

“Oh, you could do it, Momma.” He smiled, grabbed my hand and pulled me down the aisle. “You could just get little pieces and form the Ugly Dolls on the blanket.”

It was a little harder than I’d pictured, but he was right. I can do it. I’m no creative genius, but I’ve figured out how to do a few creative things over time. So...why not?

Which makes me wonder. If my Father is the Creator of the Heavens and the earth, the Maker of all colors, shapes, objects... everything, what is there out there I’d like Him to create for me? Do I need Him to find the money I’ve been looking for in my squeaky-tight budget? Do I need extra time for exercise in my seemingly packed sixteen or so waking hours? Do I need more love for my husband? Grace for my children? More forgiveness for those people I don’t like to mention?

If so, why don’t I just ask Him for it? After all, He created all that stuff. He could do it. And it’d be easier for Him than a child’s blanket.
