The Burl Posted on January 9, 2009 12:00 AM MST by Tiffany Kinerson“...Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” I John 3:18
The key is finding a saw mill that can splice the mega-chunk into useful slabs of wood. Hmm, problem. The burl’s been in our garage four months, now. We haven’t yet been able to turn our space-stealing wooden glob into something great. For almost four months the thing’s resided in the second stall of our two-car garage, beckoning to homeless roaches, “come, live in me.” It seems to stretch its girth when we need equipment from the far side of its bed quarters. It sits like the burl that it is: useless, stationary... but bursting with potential. In the middle of everything. Taking up useless space. Kind of like good intentions. In I John, the writer describes the God-given agape kind of love as demonstrative. Real love doesn’t just say it. Real love chops its good intentions into useful slabs of beautiful sincerity. It says thank you, it offers a kind hand to someone who needs it, it obeys with wisdom, it righteously gives without counting the cost. It’s tangible. But not back-breakingly weighty. Like the burl. Or like the guilt I feel when my love is left unsaid and undone. Lord, help me see what aspects in my life need to be sheared into usefulness for You. Let me be a blessing to all, instead of the burden my great plans and I can so easily become. Oh and by the way, can You help us find a good saw mill to take care of the monstrosity in the garage? |
